Pat McCall tax credits

The Film Florida Legislative meeting underlined some basic points in what is happening and what has to happen to change it. Florida is not getting much in the way of film productions despite its natural plus points. As a result, production crews, stunt companies and actors are leaving Florida to go to States where films are being produced at greater volume. This not only effects the economy of those directly connected, but it also effects Tourism - Florida's number one industry. The solution is… Continue

Pat McCall Film Florida

You would think that with all the wonderrful and interesting locales in Florida -and its being the Sunshine State - that movie producers would falling all over themselves to shoot movies here. Not to mention the great pool of acting talent available here. However, movie making is a business and States that provide large tax incentives draw the major movie makers. Florida does not come near in competing for these productions and the work and revenue that would be derived from them. Currently, Sta… Continue

Pat McCall Casting

Now I know what it feels like to cast a project. I am doing a voiceover for a local manufacturer of lifts for wheelchairs and scooters. The producer asked me if I knew of local actors that would fit the background scenarios. He needed five of different generations. Fortunately, I do know five wonderful actors who fit the bill. Even though there is not dialogue involved, it is a paying gig! I am happy to say that it will be special to see them on set tomorrow. Continue

Pat McCall Stimulus

It's always exciting to get involved in new projects. And, I believe that the way to do that is to keep busy marketing yourself - not only to get a role - but also when you are on a set and working. It;s always easier to find work with people who know and have a positive experience with you than it is to find work with people who do not know you. It's called networking on a basic level. But, it's more than just chatting it up - it's being a positive force on any and all projects. It takes focus… Continue

Pat McCall Series?

There was a full cast meeting for TRIO, the TV pilot I am cast in, on Sunday. It's a rather G-Rated show that just may catch on. It is being pitched to a new cable network, VIZNetowork, that is not launched yet. Saturday I did a part of an informercial for LifeBrands in Celebration FL. Celebration almost creeped me out looking like a superclean NJ. Lori Wyman, CSA, and Ken Grant will be in Sarasota on two different weekends with great acting workshops in September. I am coordinating both and am… Continue

Pat McCall SAG Almost Matters

Since Florida is a Right To Work state, the ramifications for actors are many. By far, most of the work available is non-union. However, if you want to get parts that pay well, you have to be a SAG member. There is a middle ground called SAG Eligible that has to be attained through a small part in a production by a SAG signatory. SAG Eligible is better than being simply non-union because the perception is that you are a real pro. Fortunately, that is where I find myself now. It will take a huge… Continue

Pat McCall ARRGH!

I traveled up to JAX on a call back for a role in a TV pilot called TRIO and was cast as a (wait for it) bumbling pirate. It's a show for kids and should be fun as I do as good an ARGGHH as any pirate has ever done. There's another movie planned on being shot inThe Sarasota area - Stalker - and I am auditioning for a role in it next week. Speaking of exciting Sarasota film news, a new production company - Florida Films - is setting up here and will specialize in Action/SciFi flicks most likely s… Continue

Pat McCall Profanity - The Movie

Profanity - The Movie will be going into production soon in Orlando and I have been cast as the Cockney Tourist in one of the vignettes about the confusion of language. SONY Pict's CRISS CROSS(Wild Things 4) was shot at The Bonnet House in Ft. Lauderdale. It was a hot shoot as the scenes were all outdoors. Team Jumpcut did its thing over the weekend for the 48 Hour Film Fest competition. I got to play Christine Alexander's Dad. This Wednesday, I go on a call-back at the Orlando Repertory Theatre… Continue

Pat McCall Criss Cross

SONY Pictures is shooting Criss Cross in S. Florida and I am going to be in it! I'll be on the set this week for the funeral scene. The 1949 version of Criss Cross is a film noir classic. This one is aimed more at a younger crowd. I'll tell you more next week. This weekend Team JumpCut defends its Best Film Title(Crimes A' Cookin') in the 48 Hour Film Fest. Nobody will know the genre we are competing in 'til Friday night. Then it has to be written, cast, filmed and edited by Sunday evening. Toda… Continue

Pat McCall Ludovico Technique

A Clockwork Orange- The Play is being produced in Ft. Myers in September. Hence, the reference to the Ludovico Technique. My memory of the movie is a little vague on details, but it is a stunning piece that will be disturbing to most of its audiences. Speaking of disturbing - I will be audtioning in Orlando for Profanity-The Movie this week. Wes Roberts, Director of TeamJumpCut, emailed that the regional 48-Hour Film Fest is coming up. We have to defend the Best Film title we won last year with… Continue

Pat McCall Who? Me?

My dear friend, Kim Crow, is performing at the Banyan Theater in The Queen of Leenane this week and I cannot wait to see it on Saturday! Meanwhile, I am awaiting final word on Sony Pictures Criss Cross - being shot around Miami. I auditioned for a TV restaurant spot Sunday. No dialogue, Just enjoying food that was not there and sharing it with a female companion - also not there. That's showbiz! I just signed up for the Del Sarte Improv class at FST. It's about the physicality of improv characte… Continue

Pat McCall Grateful

Spanish is not a language that I am anywhere near fluent in, but I was able to memorize a line well enough for a Toyota commercial. Somehow, my agentt thinks I have an Hispanic look. Must be the mustache. Sunday night a few Sarasota area actors and I got together to discuss how to grow careers and give mutual support. I think this group will get bigger. On Thursday, I'll be on a shoot playing a rogue detective in a film noir production being done in Tampa. I love those kind of roles. Continue

Pat McCall Lucky

The Rainy Season is upon us and the cranking up of TV and movie productions begins here. Burn Notice has started production again and there is talk of even more films having scenes shot in FL. Last week I auditioned at the Orlando Repertory Theater for a December production and this week it looks like more voiceover work is on the slate - along with an audition for an indie film to be shot in Tampa. It's a Bad Guy role that I always enjoy, so it should be fun. Continue

Pat McCall Actors Act

This past weekend Lori Wyman, CSA, was in Sarasota for a booksigning and a weekend workshop on Auditioning for TV & Film. I was so very pleased to see and work with so many talented actors. Auditioning is the key to success. Sure, somebody may discover an actor doing a role. But, first you have to audition to get it. And, the best way to get over the fear/nervousness is tell yourself,"This is my chance to perform - and that's what I like to do!" Casting Directors always want your audition to… Continue

Pat McCall Focus

Early last week an indie film produced out of NYC was in Sarasota shooting some scenes for the movie The Jonestown Defense and at one point we were improv-ing while circling over Wauchula in a small aircraft. You just never know how your experiences can prepare you for the unusual. This coming weekend, one of my favorite people, Lori Wyman, will be in town for a booksigning Friday night and a two-day workshop on Auditioning for TV&Film Saturday and Sunday. I look forward to seeing a lot of m… Continue

Pat McCall Adapt

Actors sometimes pigeonhole themselves and limit their ability to grow and prosper. Fortunately, my new found "career" has a lot of variety. I act in movies and on the stage. Even an occasional mystery dinner theater is scheduled. And, of course, I do radio and TV commercials whenever I can do them. Then, there are voiceovers of various stripes. The big event after Memorial Day weekend is the booksigning at Sarasota News & Books on the 29th by multi-award winning Casting Director, Lori Wyman… Continue

Pat McCall Positive

It's not easy to maintain a positive attitude during an economic downturn that government seems hellbent to make worse. The key, from all I have read and experienced, seems to be to make sure you surround yourself with upbeat people. Actors are used to being out of work as it happens every time a film wraps or a show's run ends. Still, you have to push on to find that next gig and there will always be those who will advise you to give it up. Ignore or stay away from them. Let them wallow in thei… Continue

Pat McCall Recovery

Monday started with a drive to Punta Gorda to shoot a myriad of shots and praise the Palm Auto Mall operation - which seems to handle every car make you can think of. Its agency folk came down from Atlanta to get the footage to match the latest commercial jingle. The spots produced from this will all appear in the Ft. Myers market, so I will probably never see them. Then, yesterday, it was off to Miami for the businessman role in Up In The Air - starring George Clooney and directed by Jason Reit… Continue
